Columbia County names sole finalist for county manager
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Columbia County Board of Commissioners has nominated Deputy County Manager John Matthew Schlachter as the sole finalist to become the next Columbia County Manager.
Schlachter, who has spent more than two decades with the county, is scheduled for a formal confirmation vote by commissioners at their Nov. 17 meeting.
“Matt has dedicated his career to serving the residents of Columbia County and has demonstrated exceptional leadership, institutional knowledge, and a strong commitment to responsible government operations,” Columbia County Board of Commissioners Chairman Doug Duncan said.
“His experience across county departments, his work on major capital projects, and his understanding of our community’s needs make him well qualified to lead Columbia County into its next chapter,” Duncan added.
Schlachter started with Columbia County 21 years ago in the Road Construction Department. Over his tenure, he advanced to Construction and Maintenance Director and later served as Engineering Services Director.
For the past 10 years, Schlachter has served as Deputy County Manager. In that position, he has worked closely with several county divisions, including Development Services, Engineering Services, Water Utility, Facility Services, Planning Services and the annual budgeting process.
A licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), Schlachter holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Clemson University. County officials noted his technical background has helped guide long-range community planning, utility operations, transportation, and major capital infrastructure.
Schlachter has also played a central role in planning the county’s Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax programs, facilitating planning sessions, coordinating departmental priorities, and developing infrastructure and quality-of-life projects.
“Matt understands the importance of delivering effective, efficient services while planning responsibly for the future,” Duncan said. “He has been an integral part of the county’s leadership team for many years, and the Board is confident in his ability to continue serving our residents, employees, and community partners with integrity.”
Back in April, longtime County Manager Scott Johnson announced his retirment.
